Plan your move: A few months before the actual moving day, take some time to estimate how much stuff you’ll be moving and what size moving truck you’ll need to get the job done. Obviously, for longer moves (across the state), you’ll probably want to rent a truck large enough to make the move in one haul. However, if you’re only moving across town, you might be able to save truck rental costs by renting a smaller truck and making multiple trips.

You can rent 12 or 16-foot trucks if you only have 2-3 rooms of furniture and belongings to move. For bigger moves, 3-5 rooms in all, you’ll probably want a 22-foot truck. Other areas of caution include intersections, passing lanes, steep hills or sharp curves. Remember to drive cautiously and obey all posted speed limits.
