The first spring iteration of the popular Moonlight Walk Against Drugs in Lawton, Oklahoma was a huge success this past Friday, March 27th, with organizers estimating more than a thousand people in attendance. The annual Moonlight Walk, which is the biggest fundraiser for Crime Stoppers/Drug Busters of Southwest Oklahoma, normally takes place in October, but has been moved to spring for the foreseeable future in order to take advantage of nicer weather and give more people a chance to participate. The location was also changed to a place near Holiday House in Elmer Thomas Park, giving walkers access to better lighting, bigger sidewalks, and public restrooms.

The Moonlight Walk is not only one of Lawton’s biggest fundraisers, but it’s also a completely free event for residents and families to help educate the community about the dangers of drugs. In addition to the Walk itself, there are food vendors, as well as static displays including multiple inflatable bounce houses, face painting, the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics helicopter and other police and fire department vehicles, McGruff the Crime Dog, displays from various drug prevention agencies, live music, the Comanche Nation Native American Dancers, and many other surprises! The funds raised by the event go to pay rewards for tips that help solve crimes and keep Lawton safe.

“It’s a great benefit for the city of Lawton,” said Ashley Gates, the event coordinator. “We get people to come out and we’re a huge awareness event.” The Walk itself is a roughly one-mile circuit of Elmer Thomas Park, that begins with the cutting of a crime-scene tape “ribbon.” Businesses, church groups, schools, civic organizations, and other groups are encouraged to form teams and come out and walk as a group, with the largest team being presented with a Team Walk plaque.

As a Lawton-based company with three locations around the city, as well as additional locations in nearby Moore, Duncan, Chickasha, and Newcastle, Storage ‘R’ Us is a unique Oklahoma entity and we’re dedicated to the state and all the communities that we serve. That’s why we’re proud to support the annual Moonlight Walk Against Drugs in Lawton. It’s a way for all of us to show how much Lawton and Oklahoma mean to us, and a way for everyone to come together as a community to keep our neighborhoods and especially our children drug free, and to help keep Lawton a safe and vibrant place to live, work, and play, one step at a time.
