Storing Your RV Safely: Tips and RV Monitoring Systems

Many of us love to spend the summer touring the highways and byways of this great country in our RVs. The sun is shining, and we’re out seeing incredible sights, having unforgettable experiences, and making memories out of every mile. Unfortunately, our summer adventures are about to come to an end. Autumn officially arrives around the third week of September. With kids going back to school and the nice weather bidding us adieu, it’s time for us to begin preparations to put our RVs, boats, and other recreational vehicles back into Oklahoma storage.

Sure, some of us may hang onto the last fleeting days of summer and extend the trip a bit. Autumn is a great time to watch the leaves change colors in the Smoky Mountains, Yellowstone National Park, or Acadia National Park in Maine. But sooner or later, the road trip comes to an end. If you’re ready to head home for the winter months, we have some tips to help store your RV safely as well as some information about a new RV monitoring system that can help you keep an eye on your RV even while it’s in self storage in Oklahoma throughout the autumn and winter.

First, Some Tips on How to Prepare Your RV For Storage!

  • Consult your owner’s manual. Every RV comes with one, and it’ll give you specific instructions on how to prepare your particular model for long-term storage.
  • Before your RV goes into Oklahoma storage, be sure to remove any valuables such as jewelry, electronics, personal items, and papers. Naturally, we keep an eye on the premises, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
  • While you’re at it, remove any food, beverages, and anything that has an expiration date. Leaving it there will make your RV smell less than fresh when you come back, and it may attract bugs or other pests while your RV is sitting in storage.
  • Speaking of keeping your RV smelling fresh, you should also change out the bedclothes, linens, and so on. Give them a good wash and make sure they’re fresh when you get ready to go next summer!
  • You’ll need to do some basic maintenance tasks as well. Empty your fresh water and wastewater tanks at a dump station, and make sure that they’re clean before you put your RV into storage. You’ll also want to remove your propane tank as a safety precaution.
  • It’s a good idea to fill up your gas tank before you store any vehicle for a long period of time, and you may also want to add a fuel stabilizer. Check your owner’s manual first to see what it recommends.
  • Check all of your door and window seals. If you have an RV cover, wrap it over the exterior of the RV once you’ve placed it in a secure Oklahoma self storage facility such as Storage ‘R’ Us.

Consider an RV Monitoring System.

Naturally, at Storage ‘R’ Us, we do everything in our power to keep our clients’ belongings as safe as we can. That includes having gated and walled perimeters, 24/7 monitoring, and much more. At the same time, anything that you care enough about to put into self storage in Oklahoma is also important enough to check in on from time to time. This goes for an RV or anything else that you keep in storage, from furniture to paperwork, clothing to electronics. It may also be worthwhile to invest in some extra insurance on any stored items.

Of course, it’s not always feasible to stop by as regularly as you might like, especially during the winter months. That’s where comprehensive RV monitoring systems such as RV Whisper come into play. You can connect one of these systems to your vehicle to monitor just about anything you can imagine. This wireless monitoring system is simple to install, was designed with RVs in mind, and lets you keep tabs on your RV from your smart phone or mobile device. You can monitor just about everything:

  • Battery current sensors
  • Door and motion sensors
  • Propane level sensors
  • Temperature and humidity sensors
  • Tire pressure sensors
  • Water leak sensors
  • Water tank level sensors

As you can imagine, all of this is handy even when your RV isn’t in storage. When it is, RV Whisper can send out emails and text alerts and let you check in with your RV to your heart’s content. When you’re out on the road, you can use it to keep tabs on pets or simply keep an eye on your RV’s many systems and functions. When your RV is in storage, you’ll get peace of mind knowing what’s up with it day and night. When summer comes back around, it’ll be ready and waiting for you to hit the road once more!

Whether you’re hitting the road in a motorhome, RV, fifth wheel, mobile home, travel trailer, truck camper, or camper wagon, there’s nothing better than getting behind the wheel and exploring the great outdoors while bringing along (almost) all the comforts of home. The only question is, where do you want to go?

We all know the big names: Yellowstone National Park, the Rockies, Big Sur Coastal Highway, the Black Hills of South Dakota. But what if you’re looking for a different experience, something a little more off the beaten path? We researched some of the best RV road trips in America and came up with an alternate list that you may want to check out before you start loading up this summer!

Blue Ridge Parkway. Snaking through roughly 500 miles of Appalachian Mountains, the Blue Ridge Parkway is filled with breathtaking scenic views, tunnels through the hillsides, and plenty of camping spots and RV amenities. Go in the summer for beautiful weather and lovely vistas, or go in the fall to watch the leaves change colors. Just be aware that the sweeping curves of the parkway aren’t always as regular as what you’ll find on the interstate.

Historic New England. Whatever you’re looking for on your trip, New England is filled with great destinations for RV enthusiasts, from Maine to New Hampshire, Vermont to Massachusetts. Whatever path you take, you’ll find plenty of scenic beauty, not to mention fascinating historical sites. With lots of different routes to choose from, New England has something to offer any explorer. Even if you’ve been before, there are always new things to see. Plus each region boasts its own spectacular culinary scene, so bring your appetite along with you!

The Alabama Coast. From the FAME recording studios in Muscle Shoals to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama is full of unexpected surprises for the RV tourist. Visit the past with a trip to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute or get back to nature at Noccalula Falls Park or the Rickwood Caverns State Park, to name just a few of the interesting stops that you can find along the Alabama Gulf Coast. From stately mansions to World War II battleships, the Alabama Coast highways have a little of everything.

The Great Lakes Region. If you want to bring along a boat, jet ski, fishing poles, or paddleboards on your next RV trip, consider a tour along the U.S. side of the Great Lakes. There are plenty of places to stop and play in the water, not to mention other attractions all along the way, from lighthouses on the Apostle Islands to breathtaking must-sees like Niagara Falls. You can even bring your surfboard, as some of the Great Lakes are actually large enough to create some totally tubular surfing waves!

Death Valley. Don’t let the name fool you; there’s a lot of life in this short weekend trip. You can easily make the journey from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and back again in as little as 14 hours. Also called the Valley of Life by the local Timbisha Shoshone tribes, Death Valley is home to the world’s largest tree, as well as a golf course, tourist resorts, and man-made attractions such as Scotty’s Castle and the Wildrose Charcoal Kilns. It’s also a place where temperatures can reach up to 134 degrees and boulders sometimes mysteriously move on their own. Whatever you’re looking for on your next trip, you’ll find that Death Valley is a destination like no other; just do your homework before you drive and come prepared for a land of extremes!

RV and Vehicle Self Storage at the End of the Road. Wherever you’re headed on your next trip, home is always there when you get back. And whenever you return to wherever you call home, you can find an extra home-away-from-home for your motorhome, RV, fifth wheel, mobile home, or any other vehicle with RV and vehicle storage from Storage ‘R’ Us. No matter which of our many storage options you choose—from covered and uncovered vehicle storage to climate-controlled indoor storage and beyond—you’ll definitely want to get your vehicle and supplies properly set up for storage when you’re at the end of the road.

We’ve written before about how you can prepare boats, RVs, and other vehicles for storage, as well as how to keep out critters and other varmints while you’re not around, but here are a few quick tips to help you finish out your travel season:

  • Wash everything before you put it away. That way, when you come to get your RV out of storage for your next trip, it’ll be ready to go!
  • Cover tires and maybe even your whole RV or camper with a breathable tarp, unless you’re storing it inside. We’ve got covered RV storage at Storage ‘R’ Us that can help keep your RV out of the worst of the Oklahoma weather.
  • Remove food and other perishables while also proofing against bugs, mice, and other pests.
  • Disconnect any propane tanks before you store your RV.
  • It’s a good idea to check on your RV from time to time during the off season, just to make sure everything is still as it should be. It’s also not a bad idea to take out some insurance. At Storage ‘R’ Us, our vehicle storage is as secure as we can make it, but even we can’t protect against tornadoes, floods, and other natural disasters.

Wherever the road takes you, we’ll be here for you after it brings you back home. You can find secure, convenient, reliable RV and vehicle storage in Oklahoma at our Storage ‘R’ Us locations in Lawton, Moore, Duncan, Chickasha, and Newcastle. We’ve got plenty of options to fit your needs, so whatever you want from your vehicle storage, we’ve got you covered (and uncovered).
