After another long winter, spring has finally sprung here in Oklahoma! While Daylight Savings Time may not be very popular with all of us when we lose an hour of sleep, there’s no denying that it signals the beginning of spring, bringing with it longer days and warmer weather.

Spring also means that it’s time for spring cleaning! Time to air out the house, put away winter clothes and bedding… and finally clean all that stuff out of your basement, attic, or garage that you’ve been piling in there all winter. You’ve been telling yourself that you’d “take care of it when it was warmer.” Well… it’s warmer!

Your friendly neighborhood Oklahoma self-storage provider Storage ‘R’ Us can give you a perfect place to store all your winter clothes, extra blankets, space heaters, snow blowers, holiday decorations, hunting supplies, and anything else that you might not need during the summer months, but that’s not the only way that self-storage can help you with your spring cleaning this year. Need someplace to stage everything while you give the house a good scrubbing, shampoo the carpets, refinish that basement, or remodel a kitchen, bathroom, or closet? A clean and secure self-storage unit may be just the ticket.

Spring cleaning is about more than just putting away winter supplies and tidying up the house. The arrival of warm weather also means that you’re probably thinking about firing up that grill, getting your boat out onto the lake, or taking your motorcycle for a nice long ride. Did you know that the Oklahoma self-storage experts at Storage ‘R’ Us can also store boats, RVs, motorcycles, and just about anything else that you can imagine? So when you’re ready to get that boat out on the water, or clean the mothballs out of your RV, boat and RV storage at Storage ‘R’ Us can ensure that your recreational vehicles are in great shape and out of the way when they’re not in use, and that they’re ready to go as soon as that perfect weekend rolls around.

Of course, you’re not the only one who’s been cooped up all winter. The kids will have sports equipment that can be kept in storage when not in use, and man’s best friend is going to want to get out and enjoy the nice weather, too. That means longer walks with your dog, trips to the dog park, or even just playing catch outside. Unfortunately, that also means that your pet may come back covered in mud or grass or who-knows-what. That’s okay, though, because thanks to our self-service dog wash station at our East Gore location in Lawton, Storage ‘R’ Us even has Rover covered.

So when you’re thinking of spring cleanup and summer fun this year, think of Storage ‘R’ Us. Whether you’re storing winter items, cleaning up your boat, motorcycle, or RV, or your pupster a bath at our self-service dog wash station, Storage ‘R’ Us has your spring cleaning covered.

Whether you already have a self-storage unit or are just considering trying one out, you may be asking yourself, “What should I put in it?” Of course, the most obvious answer is: “Anything you’re not using or need to get out of the way.” A self-storage unit is a great way to tidy up your house, but climate controlled self-storage can offer you more than just a way to de-clutter your life. Here are a few innovative ways that people have found to use their self-storage units:

  • Support Your Home-Based Business: It may come as a surprise, but more than 51% of all businesses in the US are run out of the home. That means no offices, no warehouses, no storefronts. Just someone’s living room, den, or garage. From freelance writers and artists to people sewing handmade clothes or baking specialty treats, home-based businesses come in all shapes and sizes… but they all have one thing in common: They need space to store supplies or excess inventory that quickly threatens to take over their home. Many home-based business owners turn to climate controlled self-storage as a way to keep a handle on supplies and inventory, while still keeping them close at hand.
  • Sell Things on Online: Even if you don’t run a business out of your home, many people in America sell things on eBay or Etsy. Maybe it’s stuff that you make in your spare time, or maybe you like to go around to garage sales and auctions and find great deals that you can then re-sell for a little profit. Whatever the case may be, selling online means holding onto items until they’re ready to ship. If you do it regularly, it also means keeping plenty of packing materials on hand. A self-storage unit can be a great solution for keeping that collection of Beanie Babies safe until they’re ready to be shipped out to their new home.
  • Store Crafting Supplies: Speaking of Etsy, these days more and more people have crafting hobbies. Just take a drive through any big town and you’ll see craft stores aplenty. Scrapbooking is especially popular, allowing people to take that boring old family photo album and turn it into something that expresses their own personal style, while still keeping all those cherished memories. Whatever your hobby, a climate controlled self-storage unit can preserve all your crafting supplies so they stay neatly organized and right where you need them when you’re ready to work.
  • Staging Your House for Sale: When it comes time to sell your house, you want it to look its best… but you may not be ready or able to move everything into your new place before the old one is sold. What’s the answer? Self-storage can give you a place to store things so they’re out of the way when people come to view your home, while still giving you easy access to them when you need them.

Whatever use you have in mind for your self-storage unit, climate controlled self-storage from Storage ‘R’ Us has the perfect solution for you! Come see us today, or give us a call, and let one of our experienced self-storage specialists help you find just the right self-storage unit for your needs.

While it isn’t exactly a holiday, there’s one date in April no one is likely to forget: April 15th, the deadline for filing your taxes. While many of us may wait until the last possible minute to get all that paperwork sent out to the IRS, we also probably wish we’d made it a point to file earlier, or spent a little more time getting everything in order. After all, the more organized we are, the smoother filing goes, and while doing your taxes or getting them done isn’t something that anybody looks forward to, it’s something that we all have to do. So why not make it as painless as possible?

To that end, here are a couple of facts that you might not know: April is not only Records and Information Management Month, but the 3rd week of April is also Organize Your Files Week. Combined with tax season, that makes April the perfect month to get all your files and other paperwork in order. Do you have a bunch of receipts that you need to organize? Old manuals and warranty information for appliances and other electronics that should be put together? Medical records, paystubs, contracts, or any other important paperwork that needs to be kept safe? Or maybe you’ve got a lot of personal correspondence in the form of letters or postcards, or boxes of family photos that haven’t found their way into albums yet?

If you’re running a small business, especially one out of your home, then that means even more paperwork and an even more complicated tax filing, and so all the more reason to get it all organized and keep it that way.

Whatever form your personal or business paperwork takes, there’s only one thing better than getting it all put in order: Making sure it stays that way. That’s where climate controlled self-storage can help. The IRS recommends that you keep tax returns from previous years for as long as 7 years, while other paperwork and records should be kept for various times ranging from a year to 7 years to even longer. All that paperwork takes up space, and can quickly and easily get scattered in your home or office. A storage unit from Storage ‘R’ Us can give you someplace to keep your old records that’s out of the way, yet easily accessible. Climate controlled self-storage can keep even paperwork and sensitive documents safe and free of moisture or other perils, without the danger of them become damaged or unreadable over time.

You can keep files organized in a filing cabinet inside your storage unit, or if you don’t have a filing cabinet, there are special cardboard filing boxes and expandable folders that can keep paperwork and files in order and neatly labeled without a lot of expense. Whatever method of organization works for you, a climate controlled self-storage unit can make sure that all your important paperwork is where you need it, when you need it, and always at your fingertips.

The first spring iteration of the popular Moonlight Walk Against Drugs in Lawton, Oklahoma was a huge success this past Friday, March 27th, with organizers estimating more than a thousand people in attendance. The annual Moonlight Walk, which is the biggest fundraiser for Crime Stoppers/Drug Busters of Southwest Oklahoma, normally takes place in October, but has been moved to spring for the foreseeable future in order to take advantage of nicer weather and give more people a chance to participate. The location was also changed to a place near Holiday House in Elmer Thomas Park, giving walkers access to better lighting, bigger sidewalks, and public restrooms.

The Moonlight Walk is not only one of Lawton’s biggest fundraisers, but it’s also a completely free event for residents and families to help educate the community about the dangers of drugs. In addition to the Walk itself, there are food vendors, as well as static displays including multiple inflatable bounce houses, face painting, the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics helicopter and other police and fire department vehicles, McGruff the Crime Dog, displays from various drug prevention agencies, live music, the Comanche Nation Native American Dancers, and many other surprises! The funds raised by the event go to pay rewards for tips that help solve crimes and keep Lawton safe.

“It’s a great benefit for the city of Lawton,” said Ashley Gates, the event coordinator. “We get people to come out and we’re a huge awareness event.” The Walk itself is a roughly one-mile circuit of Elmer Thomas Park, that begins with the cutting of a crime-scene tape “ribbon.” Businesses, church groups, schools, civic organizations, and other groups are encouraged to form teams and come out and walk as a group, with the largest team being presented with a Team Walk plaque.

As a Lawton-based company with three locations around the city, as well as additional locations in nearby Moore, Duncan, Chickasha, and Newcastle, Storage ‘R’ Us is a unique Oklahoma entity and we’re dedicated to the state and all the communities that we serve. That’s why we’re proud to support the annual Moonlight Walk Against Drugs in Lawton. It’s a way for all of us to show how much Lawton and Oklahoma mean to us, and a way for everyone to come together as a community to keep our neighborhoods and especially our children drug free, and to help keep Lawton a safe and vibrant place to live, work, and play, one step at a time.

So, you’ve decided that it’s time to rent a self-storage unit for yourself or your family. Maybe your kids are going off to college and you need someplace to store their stuff. Maybe your collection of tools has finally outgrown your garage—or maybe you just need someplace to keep your holiday decorations the rest of the year. Whatever the reason, when the time comes to pick out a self-storage unit, you’ll probably find yourself with a lot of questions. What kinds of things can you store in your self-storage unit? What size unit is right for you? What are the best ways to go about putting your belongings in the unit, or packing them into boxes?

Luckily, there are a lot of resources available that can help you find the answers to these and lots of other questions. At Storage ‘R’ Us, we regularly tweet helpful self-storage tips at the #SelfStorageTips hashtag. You can also check out the self-storage tips tag on our ‘blog for previous entries that cover topics from how to pack boxes for a move, to what to do when your hobby outgrows your home, or visit the Storage Tips page at the website of our Moore, OK location.

To get you started, here are a few basic self-storage tips that just about anyone new to self-storage can use:

  • When packing boxes, distribute weight as evenly as possible and ensure that the contents are packed tightly to help with lifting and to prevent contents from shifting around.
  • When filling your unit, keep aisles between items for easy access, and make sure to leave a little space (at least an inch) between the outside walls and your belongings, to let the air circulate.
  • Just like in a move, labeling boxes can be a lifesaver, and if you think you may have trouble remembering what is where, consider making a map and keeping it tacked to the wall near the front of your unit, so that you can find what you need quickly.
  • Make the best use of your unit’s space by stacking items to the ceiling, but make sure you stack heavy objects on the bottom, and that the items in the lower part of the stack can support the weight of the items above them. Also, make sure that your stacks are stable and won’t fall over easily.
  • Re-purpose stored items like old refrigerators, chests-of-drawers, and large trash cans by storing smaller items inside them.

Those and other resources can help you answer just about any storage-related question that you may have. But if you’re still scratching your head, you can always call or come visit any of our convenient locations and ask one of our friendly staff. We’d be happy to help you out with everything from moving supplies and PENSKE truck rentals to picking the right storage unit for your needs.

It may still be early in March, but believe it or not, spring is just around the corner. The holiday decorations have all come down, and by now you’ve probably even gotten around to removing the Christmas lights from the outside of your house. Plus, we’ve been having a particularly warm winter here in Moore, for the most part, so you may have already needed to pull some of the extra blankets off your bed, or dig out your cooler spring wardrobe.

The transition from winter to spring means packing away a lot of things and unpacking a lot of others. You’ll need someplace to store all those holiday decorations—and the new ones you bought during the after-holiday sales—as well as all the sweet presents you got. You’ll need to pack away your blankets and your heavy winter coats, your sweaters and your snow boots. And while we’re on the subject, that snow blower is probably taking up some valuable garage real estate, right?

Not to mention, with spring on the way, it’s time to haul out more than just your swim trunks and short-sleeved shirts. Spring means gardening supplies, kiddie pools, fishing gear, sports equipment, and maybe even boats, campers, and 4-wheelers are coming out of hibernation and getting ready for the outdoor fun of spring. Also, as the weather warms up, you’ll find yourself wanting to fire up that grill!

The advent of spring also means the coming of spring cleaning. It’s finally time to throw out some of the stuff that’s been accumulating, or find someplace to store the stuff that you still want to hang on to. What’s the solution to all this stuff? Well, you could keep trying to cram it into your garage, basement, or attic, or you could look into self-storage in Moore, Oklahoma.

Self-storage in Moore is perfect for seasonal items; whether it’s holiday decorations, winter clothes, sports equipment, gardening supplies, you name it! If it’s something that you only need for part of the year, why should it take up space in your house all year round? With a self-storage unit from Storage ‘R’ Us, you can keep all your seasonal items safe, sound, and easily accessible, without sacrificing space or convenience. And when the seasons change, you can simply change out the contents of your storage unit. Put away those winter coats and sleds, and pull out your fishing gear and lawn sprinklers!

With self-storage in Moore from Storage ‘R’ Us, you can even store vehicles like boats, RVs, campers, 4-wheelers, and motorcycles during the winter months so that they’re available for you when the weather starts to warm up. Whatever you’re storing this season, self-storage in Moore can help you transition from winter to spring and, when the time comes, back again.

Chances are you’ve driven by storage facilities (maybe even some of ours!) and seen signs for “climate controlled self-storage,” but maybe you’re not sure what that means, or why you might need it. When most people picture a storage unit, after all, they’re pretty much imagining a concrete room with a rolling metal door. And that’s all many self-storage units are, and all that they need to be.

But sometimes you need to store something that’s particularly valuable, or irreplaceable—like an original piece of art, a rare book, a one-of-a-kind family heirloom. Other times, you simply need to store something that’s environmentally sensitive. Electronic items and wood furniture are just a couple of common storage items that can be damaged by extremes of heat or cold.

So that takes care of why you might need climate controlled self-storage, but we’re still left with the question of just what is climate controlled self-storage? Well, fortunately, the answer is pretty much there in the name. A climate controlled self-storage unit is one where the environment stays constant. Since temperature is usually the biggest factor in the environment of a self-storage unit, climate controlled self-storage is also often called “temperature controlled” self-storage.

And while climate controlled self-storage is heated in the winter and cooled in the summer, to make sure that the temperature stays within a regulated range, that’s only one of the safeguards present to protect your valuables. Climate controlled self-storage units also protect against dust and humidity, and keep out pests that can damage or destroy your belongings. Not only that, but because they’re enclosed and temperature controlled, climate controlled self-storage units can be perfect for people who visit their units frequently. If you’re a big scrapbooker, for instance, and need to store a lot of scrapbooking supplies that you access frequently, climate controlled would definitely be the way to go.

Of course, you can never be too careful, especially with valuables such as family heirlooms or antiques, so it’s also a good idea to invest in self-storage insurance if you’re storing items of significant value, or that would be difficult to replace. At Storage ‘R’ Us, the safety and security of your belongings is our top concern, and we do everything that we can to ensure that when you want them, they’re waiting for you just as you left them. But even the most secure facility isn’t proof against everything, and insurance can be a lifesaver in the case of a tornado or other natural disaster.

Whether what your storing is a priceless painting, or simply your son or daughter’s finger painting that is priceless to you, climate controlled self-storage can be the perfect place for anything that you want to keep protected from extremes of temperature, humidity, dust, or other dangers.

We probably don’t think much about it when we’re sitting in Sunday service, but there’s a lot that goes into maintaining and running your local church. Not just the work of preparing sermons and services, organizing church events, and operating outreach programs, but also simply the physical requirements that every church faces. A church needs a place for all its members to come to worship, as well as meeting space and other facilities. These days, churches are a lot more than just a few pews and a nave. Churches are gathering places for the community, offering classes and workshops for children and adults, and providing opportunities for fellowship and outreach.

Keeping all of that going requires a lot of “stuff,” though. Whether it’s books and pews, extra tables and folding chairs, or seasonal décor, storage space in a church can quickly start to become a premium. Not to mention that a church needs to have all the same things on hand that the average homeowner might, from tools to fix the occasional broken door handle to a lawnmower to keep the grounds nice and tidy.

Many local churches also host other local organizations, including meetings for homeowners associations, other neighborhood groups, or the local Boy Scouts, and they often have to store equipment and supplies related to those activities, as well. If you’ve never looked in the closet of your local church, you might be surprised to find it filled to bursting with all manner of unexpected items.

Churches also receive a lot of donations for community outreach programs. Sometimes those come in the form of money, but they also often take the form of canned goods, clothing items, gifts for children around the holidays, and many other vital items. Before these can be sent out to families in need, they have to be sorted and stored somewhere. Many churches also run outbound ministry efforts, which can require a lot of different supplies to be kept on hand. Some churches even offer housing options for underserved families in the community, and in those cases, they’ve got to store everything that goes into making a home for a family.

In all, running a church means keeping track of a lot of stuff, and many local churches find that the needs of their congregation and community quickly outstrip the amount of closet or attic space that their own facilities provide. Self-storage for churches is a simple and cost-effective answer to those kinds of problems. A storage unit can give churches a place to keep seasonal décor when it’s not in use, a space for overflow of furniture for meetings and special events, or a staging area for donations until they can be sent out to the people who need them. Whatever the storage needs of your local church, a self-storage unit from Storage ‘R’ Us in Oklahoma may just be the answer!

Everyone knows that adding a new bundle of joy to the family can also bring with it a bundle of new expenses. Once you’re back from the delivery room and you’re looking at the hospital bills and tallying up the money you’re going to be spending on diapers, you probably don’t even want to think too much about the fact that you’ll be buying baby clothes every few months for the foreseeable future.

Babies grow fast, after all, and anyone who has ever had one can tell you that they outgrow clothes like they’re going out of style. In fact, according to the Consumer Expenditure Survey, the average American home spends between $700 and $1,000 just on baby clothes in the first year. Keep in mind that’s just clothes—that number doesn’t even take into account car seats, strollers, cribs, and all the other accoutrements that a growing baby needs.

Running through baby clothes and supplies can seem not only pricey, but also wasteful. It’s a shame to buy something knowing that the baby is probably going to outgrow it almost before you can remove the tags. Fortunately, this is a problem that faces all new parents, so there are plenty of options that can help keep baby clothes and accessories from breaking the bank, and also help you pay it forward for other new or expecting parents down the road.

Just like the vintage thrift store where you found that coat you love, there are consignment shops in most cities that specialize in gently-used clothing and supplies for babies. There are also a variety of organizations designed to let new and expecting parents trade and swap for clothes and other necessities. Once your baby has outgrown that jumper, you can pass it on to someone who is still expecting. Local swaps are organized in most communities, and of course the Internet has gotten in on the action, with a variety of swap sites set up allowing parents all over the country to swap clothes, accessories, and advice.

When Good Morning America ran a special on how to save a little cash when outfitting your newest addition, they found that parents could make as much as $170 to $520 reselling their gently-used baby clothes and accessories. But sometimes being able to pass on something your baby has outgrown to another baby who needs it is more of a reward than getting a few bucks back.

Besides the cost associated with all those baby clothes, carriers, strollers, and other odds and ends, there’s also all the space they take up. Whether you’re planning to save your baby supplies for the next addition to your family, to pass them along to another family member, or to resell or swap them, they can certainly take up a lot of space in the meantime. It can be all-too easy to part with them just to free up some space in your house. But a better solution can be using an Oklahoma self-storage unit to store your baby clothes and supplies—either until the next little one is old enough to need them, or until they’re ready to find their way to a good home.
